The shirine first appeared in historical documents in 855, and its religious origin dates back to much earlier times. Its chief deities called Niumyojin and Koyamyojin are, according to legend, the deities who, when Kukai, Kobo Daishi was looking for the land for the construction of Kongobuji temple, gave the land to him and guided him to Koyasan. Those two deities are worshiped in Koyasan as a guardian deities.
